The »Gemeinschaft zur Förderung von Kinder- und Jugendliteratur e.V.« (Community for the promotion of children's and youth literature) was founded in Berlin on 23.5.1990. It aims »to promote reading as a prerequisite for the cultural development of all people« (articles of registered association). The membership of the registered association is made up of people who have anything to do with children's and youth literature (authors, illustrators, proof readers, librarians, teachers, academics and students).
The registered association has published the list of recommendations called the »Der Rote Elefant« (The Red Elephant) since 1993. On 2nd April 1993 the »Community for the promotion of children's and youth literature« founded LesArt, the Berlin centre for children's and youth literature, and acts as its funding body.
