The city is big
Berlin as a literary setting
Parole Emil - 70 Berlin primary school classes make an Emil newspaper Everything that happens makes it way into the newspaper. It just has to be a bit out of the ordinary, wrote Erich Kästner in 1929 in the foreword to »Emil and the Detectives«. In 1999, Kästner would have been 100 years old and his children's classic was 70 years old. Extraordinary enough to make it in to the newspaper? LesArt thought so and invited 70 primary school classes in the years 4 and 5 to celebrate these two birthdays with their own newspaper.
And how do you make an Emil newspaper? A one-day training for the teachers prepared the project and tested journalist know-how, presentation options, possibilities of literary detective work etc. Work was carried out using, of course, the book itself, but also with the children's newspaper »Kiek mal«, with biographic material on Erich Kästner and with information on the locations used in the book. Each teacher drew a ticket with a set task that has to be done to guarantee the journalistic variety within the newspaper. (They could swap tasks if they wanted.) All other contributions were left up to the children. Each class put an Emil newspaper together made up of text and pictures. The task on the ticket, e.g. a fictitious interview with the author Erich Kästner, a portrait of Pony Hütchen, reader's letters to Mr Grundeis-Müller-Kiesling, Gustav and Emil, a picture story, a picture book game, a crossword etc. all went into the joint newspaper.
And what happened with the finished newspaper? The final party took place in a location of literary interest, the Zoo Palast cinema. The young journalists, approximately 2000 children, saw their newspaper in the form of a slide show and, as a treat, the new film of Kästner's »Pünktchen and Anton«. When leaving the cinema, the children all took 5 copies of the Emil newspaper in order to distribute it in the city. (The print run was 12,000 copies thanks to the support of the Cecilie Dressler Verlag and dtv.)
The printed copy is now no longer available. This is the complete reprint:
