Content One day, the clever cat Zorbas, who lives in the port in Hamburg, receives a visit from a seagull who is fatally ill. Faced with this death, Zorbas promises to do everything the seagull asks of him: 1. to hatch the egg that she will lay, 2. to care for the baby seagull and 3. to teach the small seagull how to fly! But how can a cat teach a seagull how to fly ...? The Chilean author approaches the subject »responsibility for a life« - and in this case even a different species - with humour and ease. The different cat characters are particularly expressive and funny. The film uses the basic idea of the book, but places a slightly different emphasis. It adds a »war« between cats and rats to the story and thus provides the film with more action. The central theme is, however, still »responsibility«.

Activity concept: The idea This example is used to demonstrate how moving pictures are created. The corresponding technical procedures can - especially with younger children - be shown more easily if one appeals to the emotions. Selected book illustrations of the main animal figures (see example below) were, therefore, deliberately chosen as an introduction to the topic. The children then use these illustrations to imagine what characteristics the animals might have. These are then augmented by passages from the book: initially the passages are read out loud with the participants taking the different roles, and later then played from a cassette. The illustrations that have already been shown now characterise the »moving« pictures that appear in the mind when listening to the text. The switch from reading out loud to the use of the cassette alienates the communicative situation in place up to that moment and creates a bridge to the technical media. The procedure is interrupted at the critical question: But how can a cat teach a seagull how to fly? The »animal groups« that were set up at the beginning using the book illustrations then discuss different possibilities. Using the proper pens, picture sequences are drawn onto transparent paper, so that the different »flying schools« can make their presentations on the overhead projector later. A flip book then introduces the moving pictures of the cartoon. At the end the children see the corresponding section of the cartoon and, of course, the solution to the problem. Time: approx. 3 hours; Concept: Edda Eska and Silke Fokken
