Contents Irmela Brender's children's book is an open invitation to play. To play a game with words in which everybody can join in. Words can be turned around and changed, you can collect them and turn them into treasure. Soft, funny and contemplative messages relay the rhymes and poems to the children. Irmela Brender wrote them seemingly effortlessly and put them together in nine short chapters as wordplays, limericks and verse. These greetings, bedtime poems, verses should always be on hand as language is the »original experience« of self-expression and reading can be found in them. The idiosyncratic and imaginative illustrations and vignettes by Verena Ballhaus accompany the poems and underline the playful character of this children's book. (Jury's reason for the nomination of this book for the German Youth Literature Award 2002, Children's book category, published by the Association for Children's and Youth Literature )

Activity concept: The idea The children should, using association and wordplay, be encouraged to write their own poems and then enjoy reading them out loud. The perfect rhyme or deep meaning are not of primary importance, but rather the fun and enjoyment of wordplay and the sound and rhythm of language. Some of the poems by Irmela Brenders should be read out loud as they are particularly suited to this activity. That is why the presentation is public. A writing and reciting workshop is used for preparation. In this way a »loud« and »quiet« approach to poetry can be combined. Time: approx. 3.5 hours; Concept: Sylvia Krupicka and Frank Sommer
