Content With thunder and lightning outside, the girl in her bed does not only dwell on dark thoughts. She cannot get to sleep and therefore starts to think: about creation and the meaning of life, about herself and about what could happen after death. Michele Lemieux has taken these philosophical ideas and introduced them in an original and thought-provoking manner. For her pictures she uses allegories, symbols and similes. The artist, who is known for her colour-intensive illustrations, shows her talent for line drawings without colour in this handily-sized picture book in landscape format. (Jury's reason for the nomination of this book for the German Youth Literature Award 1997, Picture book category, published by The Association for Children's and Youth Literature)

Activity concept: The idea The structure of the book is itself already an activity concept. The structure is based on a sleepless night with its own dynamic of pictures and thoughts in the mind. The book is a treasure trove for creative ideas due to its many different levels. Individual pages provide inspiration for associations and stories. Pictures and questions can be separated from each other and then be reattributed differently or even give rise to your own questions and pictures. The starting point is however the framework of a sleepless night which is simulated with the use of a real bed, thus providing a real point of connection for the children. The activity then continues with enough space to take the possible fears that children might have in a stormy night and then to draw up and discuss a stormy night book based on those fears. Time: approx. 4 hours; Concept: Miriam Dowe, Sabine Mähne, Jule Pfeiffer-Spiekermann, Claudia Rouvel
